RHexplore
RHexplorer allows you access to all of your interactive maps.
RHexplorer is built around two basic concepts; firstly define what it is you may be looking for, and then locate them on the maps. To accommodate for this interaction you will notice 4 distinct components:
- "Where is?" locator
- "Quick search" utility
- "Quick Maps" utility
- "Map Viewer"
"Where is?"
The "Where is?" locator allows the user to locate to an Address, Intersection or a Facility.
Simply define the type of search to perform by selecting from Address, Intersection or Facility.
Depending on the type of locate specified the user will be presented with differing input criteria.
"Look up" icons will recognize partial or no user input and will present the user with available selections to choose from.
"Quick search"
The "Quick search" utility allows the user to quickly locate to predetermined "Search items" that are presented in a pull down menu.
Simply select the "Search item" of interest and then click the "look up" icon. The "look up" icon will recognize partial or
no user input to the "Name" field and present the user with the available selections to choose from.
Note: the user can refine the search by entering partial information into the "Name" field.
"Quick maps"
The "Quick Maps" utility allows users to quickly access predetermined maps. Click on the pull down menu, select the map of interest, and click the "GO" button to show the selected map.
"Map Viewer"
The "Map Viewer" utility gives the user access to all the available interactive maps and the Map Viewer tools. Simply click on "Map Viewer", "Basic", or "Advanced" and the following interface will appear.
1. Map Tabs
Each map tab (Resident, Visitor, Business etc.) has been designed to accommodate a specific purpose.
Therefore the available data and how it is presented will vary from one map tab to the other.
Simply click on the tab of interest.
2. Legend
Clicking the Legend button at any time will display an interactive legend representative of the layers
of data that are visible at the current map scale for the current map tab.
3. Full View
Clicking the Full View button at any time will "zoom" to the maximum extents of the current map (a Town wide view as seen above).
4. Overview
Clicking the Overview button at any time will show where you are in the current map (shown by a red box) in relation to the full view of the Town. The user can redefine their area of interest by drawing a new box on the Overview map. While holding the left mouse button down,'drag' to define the new area. The map will redraw automatically.
5. Scale
The scale of the map is represented as a ratio; the user can overwrite this value at any time.
Simply type in the scale you wish to view the map at eg. 1: 500.
Note: The map scale is only visible by selecting "Map Viewer" Advanced.
Map Viewer Basic Tools

Zoom in
The "Zoom in" tool allows you to zoom into a point or a selected area on the map.
Click the icon then click in the map area or click and drag a ´rectangle´ across the map.
When the mouse button is released the map will zoom into the area you selected.

Zoom out
The "Zoom out" tool allows you to zoom out from the current map image to display a larger area.
Click the icon then click in the map area. The map will redraw at a larger scale centered on the point clicked.

Move to centre
The "Move to centre" tool will re-centre the map around a user specified point.
Click the icon then click in the map area where you would like to have the map centered.
The scale of the map will remain the same.
Note: you will notice some arrows in the margin of the mapping area. These arrows allow you to Pan the map in
the direction of the arrows, be it north, south, east, west etc.

Get more information
The "Get more information" tool allows you to view text attributes related to a feature on the map.
Click the icon then click the feature on the map you are interested in. You will be presented with a "more information" dialogue box listing any attribute details about the point clicked on.
Because the maps display overlapping features such as Points of Interest and Property Fabric it is up to the user to select from the returned "more information" box which layer of data they would like information on. The available layers with associated attributes are presented to the user in a pull down menu.

Print map
The "Print map" tool allows the user to print their map using predefined templates.
- Clicking the "Print map" tool opens the "print map" page.
- The user can then choose the orientation of the printed map either portrait or landscape.
- They may also choose to add a title, subtitle, as well as any comments to the printed map.
- Clicking the blue "create a printer friendly map" button will open your map complete with Town of Richmond Hill logo, map legend, and disclaimer.
- To have the map printed, select the print icon from the browser window’s tool bar or select "print" from the "File" pull down menu.

Add Remove Data
The "Add/Remove data" tool when clicked will open the "Display Manager" (shown below), which will display to the user the layers of data available for any "Map Tab" and the scale at which the layer will be visible on the map. This tool also provides the user the control to turn the layers on or off, change their drawing order or to view metadata (data about data) for a certain layer.

Select to move (Drawing Order)
The layers can be reordered from the default settings.
For example, the user may wish to show the "Property" on top
of the "Points of Interest" so the lines from the Property are not obscured by the symbol depicting the Points of Interest.
To do so, select the button beside the Property layer then using the "select to move" arrows move the layer above the Points of Interest layer.
Click the update button to apply the changes and "Go to map viewer" to view the changes.
Visibility
The layers can be turned on or off by checking or un-checking the check box beside the layer name.
Click the update button to apply the changes and "Go to map viewer" to view the changes.
It is important to take note of the "Visibility Scale" as this will determine at what scale the layer will become visible once checked.
Metadata
The metadata icon when clicked will display information about the layer of data, namely; a description of the data, who created it, when was it was last updated, who maintains it, and how complete it is.

Clear selection(s)
The "Clear selection(s)" tool will clear any graphics the user has added to the map view.
As an example, when the user locates to an address this address is shown on the map with a red star and labeled with
the street name and number, clicking the "Clear selections" tool will delete this from the screen.

What is nearby?
The "What is nearby?" tool locates facilities that are near an address, intersection or a facility that has been located to.
As an example, the user may wish to know of all the parks that are within a certain distance of their house or maybe the one or two parks that are the closest to their house.
When the user clicks the "What is nearby" tool the "What is nearby" page opens allowing the user to locate to facilities from a selection of predetermined facility types.

Add your point(s)
The "Add your point(s)" tool allows the user to add text and point markers to the map view.
As an example, the user may wish to show the location of their house on the map and label it i.e. "This is our house".
Clicking the "Add your point(s) tool opens the "Add your point(s)" page. The user selects the size and style of text to add, enters the text label "This is our house" clicks the "go" button and then clicks on the map where they would like the label placed.
Note: clicking the "Clear selection(s) tool or "Clear points" tool will delete all labels placed on the map.

Measure area/length
The "Measure area/length" tool allows the user to measure features on the map.
Clicking the "Measure area/length" tool opens the "measure" page allowing the user to select either area or length measuring tools.

The measure area tool allows the user to trace the area of interest and get the area calculations.
A minimum of three points is required to calculate area.

The measure length tool allows the user to trace map features and get the length calculations.
At any time the user can choose to convert the measurement by changing the display units (feet, meters, yards, kilometers).
The user must "clear" the previous measurement prior to beginning a new measurement.
